The Planning Commission is considering a Conditional Use Permit and Architectural Review for a new 3,654 square foot In-N-Out Burger fast-food chain with a drive-thru at the Planning Commission meeting on Monday July 19, 2010. However, it looks like the city staff want’s a continuance on this until August 16th.  Please read the PDF below:

Conditional Use Permit

The planning commision will be discussing a Conditional Use Permit and Architectural Review for a new in-and-out burger fast-food establishment with a drive-thru. They want a variance application for a free-standing sign exceeding maximum height and maximum square footage.  The fast food place will provide some tax revenue for the city but will have many negative impacts to traffic, health, and safety in our community.

This article describes the negative traffic impacts.

Readers should educate themselves on the health consequences of these type of establishments.

Watching the academy award nominated documentary Food Inc. is a good place to learn about the health and environmental implications of this type of diet.  It’s available as an instant play on netflix if you have the service.

In-N-Out Burger requested the continuance of this item to address comments by the Transportation and Circulation Commission regarding entry driveway movement and additional drainage engineering and sign placement analysis.

The application will now be heard at the Planning Commission Meeting on August 16th, 2010 not Monday July 19 or June 21st as originally planned.  This is a three month delay…

If you have any questions regarding this project please contact the Planning Division at (650) 802-4263 and post a comment on the site.

Please attend if you want your voice heard!

  1. Thanks for your feedback Karen!

  2. I also think it’s strange they would build an In-and-Out in San Carlos since they are building one a mere five miles away in Redwood City (across from Kaiser Hospital).

Food Inc is an excellent documentary that vividly shows how it’s cheaper to feed people fast food than good food – because the government subsidizes the fast food so heavily.

  3. Folks,

It looks like the Conditional Use Permit for the fast food place will be moved to August 16th.

  4. Thanks for your feedback Gina.

I think a lot of people do not realize the health and environmental consequences of fast food. The GESC board has not taken an official stance on the restaurant, what do people think, should we support it or oppose it?

  5. I think it is terrible that the City of San Carlos would consider an In and Out burger. As a parent I want to limit the amount of empty calories that my children consume. I think it is very odd that it will be right next door to a planned hospital as well. I would like to see San Carlos setting an example to other cities showing them that we care about our health!
